A story of compassion and fortitude unfolds: this unfortunate canine, cast into the river confined in an iron cage, endured hunger, cold, and agonizing despair until rescuers came to his aid.

Bert Fritz, originally from Brazil and a dedicated middle school science teacher at Next Generation Science School in Champaign, embarked on a unique curriculum that turned into a lifelong passion. His journey took an unexpected turn when he arrived at Kaufman Lake, encountering a colony of tail-wagging dogs, with one special member named Dory-a black and white puppy fighting for survival amidst freezing waters, encapsulated in a dog crate.

With Dory’s head barely above the freezing water, Fritz noticed the dire situation. Without hesitation, he kicked off his shoes, discarded layers of clothing, and plunged into the icy lake to rescue the helpless dog. “I recognized the partially submerged corpse,” Fritz recalls, “with his head above water but his body engulfed by the icy depths.”

On this chilly winter day, Fritz made a swift decision. Venturing 15 to 20 yards into the lake, he rescued Dory, who had been in the frigid water for hours. However, it became apparent that Dory’s ordeal had left her with severe injuries. “There was blood everywhere,” Fritz said. “She was missing fur on her back, her paws were in bad shape, and she was visibly suffering, shaking and with her eyes shut.”

Without delay, Fritz contacted the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, informing them of the urgent situation. On his way, he wrapped Dory in a blanket to provide warmth. At the hospital, spokesperson Chris Beuoy reported that Dory responded well to treatments for hypothermia, wounds, and other injuries, including antibiotics and pain medicine.

As Dory’s recovery continued, Fritz, filled with hope and affection, expressed his desire to adopt her. “When I completed the hospital paperwork, realized I wanted her in my life,” he shared. Inspired by Dory’s resilience, Fritz and his girlfriend Krystal named her after the beloved Disney character from “Finding Nemo,” famous for her unwavering spirit.

Fritz’s spontaneous act of bravery not only saved Dory but also opened the door to a new, loving chapter in both their lives, exemplifying the profound bond between humans and animals.
